AFTER ORAL SURGERY: RECOVERY & CARE INSTRUCTIONS

At Wisdom Teeth & Beyond Oral Surgery, we are committed to helping you heal comfortably and quickly. Following these instructions will support your recovery and reduce the risk of complications after the procedure.

The First 24 Hours

Bleeding:

  • Some light bleeding is normal for the first few hours
  • Gently bite on the provided gauze pad for 45 minutes to help control bleeding.
  • Replace the gauze as needed every 45 minutes each time until bleeding slows.
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing, or drinking through straw as these can dislodge the healing clot.

Swelling:

  • Apply an ice pack on the outside of your face for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first 48 hours.
  • Remember that swelling may peak after 2-3 days after surgery and then gradually go down.
  • Bruising is also possible.

Rest:

  • Take it easy for the rest of the day. Avoid exercise or heavy lifting for at least 48 hours.
  • Keep your head elevated with an extra pillow when resting to reduce swelling.

Pain Management:

  • Take the prescribed pain medication as directed. Do not drive or operate machinery while taking narcotic medications.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and eat soft foods before taking pain medicine to reduce stomach upset.

Oral Hygiene:

  • Do not rinse, brush, or spit for the first 24 hours.
  • After 24 hours, you can begin gently to rinse your mouth before going to bed.
  • Brush your other teeth carefully avoiding the surgical site.

Smoking and Alcohol:

  • Avoid smoking or vaping for at least 72 hours after surgery.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, especially if taking prescription pain medication.
